Course Description

Seminars in Ethical Values are designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The seminars are graded on a pass/fail basis; students earn one credit in the spring semester upon successful completion of the seminar. In this section, we will discuss several contemporary critiques of the criminal justice system. To consider where we are, how we got here, and what we might do about it, we will read recent books on crime control, policing, incarceration, and race. We are currently contemplating such readings as Paul Butler's Chokehold: Policing Black Men; Elizabeth Hinton's From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime; James Forman's Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America, and Naomi Murakawa’s The First Civil Right: How Liberals Built Prison America.
