Edward L. Hogshire, who teaches the Law School seminar Therapeutic Justice and the Evolving Role of Specialty Courts, retired in January 2014 as the circuit judge for the city of Charlottesville, where he presided over the Charlottesville-Albemarle Drug Treatment Court for nearly 16 years.

His multi-faceted career included a clerkship with Judge Albert V. Bryan Sr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit prior to his return to Charlottesville to help establish the University’s Student Legal Services Program in 1972. Before taking over as circuit judge, Hogshire directed the Criminal Practice (defense) Clinic at the Law School for 11 years while maintaining an active law practice as a principal of Buck, Hogshire & Tereskerz LLC. As circuit judge, he presided over a number high profile civil and criminal cases, several of which having received national media attention. He also served on the Planning and Development Committee of Virginia’s Drug Treatment Court Advisory Committee for over seven years.

In 2013, Hogshire was awarded the first Clarence Earl Gideon Award for leadership in the promotion of equal justice from the Citizens Advisory Board of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Public Defenders’ Office and in 2014 he received an Award in Recognition of Extraordinary Distinguished Service from Virginia Drug Court Association. Hogshire was appointed chairman of the Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission in January, 2015, a position he currently holds, and continues to serve as a substitute circuit judge on a recall basis.
