Since January 2014, Lane Kneedler has served as senior counsel to Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring. For almost 22 years prior to that, he was with the law firm of Reed Smith LLP in Richmond, representing an array of business interests before Virginia administrative agencies, the Virginia General Assembly, the State Corporation Commission, and state and federal appellate courts. Prior to entering private practice in 1992, Kneedler was a full-time faculty member at the University of Virginia Law School from 1969-1986, last serving as professor of law and associate dean. He still teaches courses at the Law School on legislation, and on conflicts of interest, lobbying and campaign finance. Kneedler served as chief deputy attorney general of Virginia from 1986-1992, and has had 28 years of experience with state Attorneys General and the National Association of Attorneys General. His experience has included representation of Virginia’s governor, lieutenant governor, and general assembly, and individual Virginia legislators in state constitutional law cases in state circuit court, and in appeals and an original action before the Virginia Supreme Court. He also has provided legal advice on state constitutional law issues to the administration and the Virginia General Assembly for many years.
