All administrative offices are open M-F 8 am - 5 pm, unless otherwise indicated. Students Affairs is listed first because of its importance to students. The rest of the offices are in alphabetical order.

Martha Ballenger, assistant dean for Student Affairs, advises and supports students regarding personal and Law School concerns, disability matters and accommodations, leaves of absence, transfers, and withdrawals. Please call the office for information and to schedule appointments.

Students who work for the Law School will need to go to this office to fill out initial paperwork and file weekly time sheets. Troy Dunaway is Assistant Dean for Business and Finance.

CASE, the Law School's online job search system, gives students 24 hour, web-based access to employment opportunities and employer information, and provides the vehicle for interview sign-ups and scheduling. Students also have access to the Law Career Network. More than 1,300 alumni nationwide have volunteered to help students and graduates in the job search by advising, making contacts, and assisting with job search strategies for specific geographical locations and practice areas. The Career Services Office is run by W. Stevenson Hopson IV, Senior Assistant Dean for Career Services.

Hours: M-F 8 am - 4 pm

Financial aid at the Law School, with Director of Financial Aid Cindy Burns, is available to any candidate who demonstrates financial need as determined by the federal needs analysis document, called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), processed through the Federal Student Aid Center, and our in-house Financial Aid Form. Types of assistance include scholarships, loans (federal and institutional) and work-study (in your second or third year). Financial aid is available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

This office administers the LL.M., S.J.D., and Visiting Scholar programs under Director Michael Dooley. Associate Director Sarah Parker Johnson advises and supports international graduate students with all aspects of Law School life.

Under Director Yared Getachew, the Center offers job placement assistance, develops and administers the Law School's voluntary pro bono program, coordinates summer internships and post-graduate fellowships, and provides intensive career counseling to students seeking careers in the public sector.

The Student Records Office under Assistant Dean for Academic Services and Registrar Cary Bennett assists students with course enrollment, coordinates the final examination process, advises students regarding academic policies and procedures, maintains official student academic records, and offers the following services:

  • provides course enrollment information through LawReg and the University's Integrated Student Information System (ISIS), the Law School Course Offering Directory (COD), Course Enrollment Information listings, updates, and the Law School web site.
  • publishes the Final Examination Schedule and creates blind grading numbers each semester, administers all flex exams, and coordinates the collection and transcription of course grades.
  • publishes/updates academic policies and procedures in the University's Graduate Record and the Law School's Course Offering Directory (COD).
  • provides information and web links to transcripts, University ID cards, the Student Accounts Office, veteran's affairs, address change form, enrollment verification and student status confirmation.
  • prepares Third Year Practice Certificates.
  • provides information and applications for the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE).
  • posts information regarding course assignments, class cancellations, research assistant positions, academic calendars, other notices.
  • provides bar examination information by jurisdiction, completes bar certifications and moral character certifications.

Tip

Virginia Law Weekly is the Law School's student newspaper, which comes out every Friday. The newspaper is always looking for new writers and columnists. If your group or department is sponsoring an activity, contact the paper for coverage. Call 924-3070 or go by Slaughter Hall, Room 277/279.

Tip

University Directory

The University makes available to every student, at no charge, a directory of faculty, staff, and student addresses and telephone numbers. Limit is one per student. Directories are available to students in November.

Tip

If you're calling within the school network or from University housing, just dial the last five numbers; for example, 4-7349 for the Career Services office.
