Shopping Centers
University students, faculty, and staff
make up a major portion of the consumer economy in Charlottesville,
and we expect that you will be no exception. This guide will
help you find the stores and services you need in town. With
a few exceptions, such as grocery stores and department stores,
we will not go into detail about national chain stores, assuming
that these are familiar to you. Instead, we will focus on
stores unique to the area, where you might find new and different
items.

DISCOUNT STORES - Virginia Law Families
Tip
Sam's Club - you can visit for free
before deciding whether to pay the $35 membership fee. Careful shopping
here can definitely stretch the family budget because you'll purchase
frequently used commodities in bulk. Some specific ideas for helping
the budget:
• A gallon of milk is
typically $.75-$1 less than grocery store prices here
• Prepared food items
(waffles/burritos/pizza rolls, etc.) are available at significant
savings. Many items are suitable to bring to school for a cheap lunch
(put in the SBA fridge and microwave at lunchtime). Also buy large
bags of pretzels, crackers, etc., for lunchboxes.
• Buy bottled water by
the case for approx $.20/bottle ($1.10 in law school vending machines).
Keep a few in the refrigerator at home and grab a couple anytime
you take the kids out to avoid paying convenience store prices when
someone gets thirsty on the road.
• School supplies (buy
a year's worth of highlighters for the price of a handful at Courts
and Commerce)
• Hot rotissierie chickens
are $4.99, $1 less than other supermarkets, and they're bigger here
too. You can easily get two full meals out of one for two adults
and two small kids.
• Posted gas prices are already the lowest in
town, but members save an additional 5¢/gallon over the price
shown when you scan your Sam's Club card at the pump.
Filling up the car and buying a gallon of milk once
a week easily pays for the membership.
WalMart -
Great for toys (good selection and best prices in town), house wares,
inexpensive clothes (some are even brands you've heard of), and seasonal
shoes—why pay more,
for example, for winter boots kids will quickly outgrow?
