Tip

A Softball Dynasty

"For as long as anyone could remember, law students played touch football, and the annual gridiron grudge matches between various Law School organizations were eagerly anticipated and bitterly fought," Ronald Bassford wrote in The Student Legal Forum: The First Fifty Years.

When the Law School moved to North Grounds in 1974, enthusiasm could not maintain the long trek to football fields on Central Grounds, and the football league died after a year or two. "While North Grounds had no football field," Bassford wrote, "it did have a lone softball diamond, Copeley Field....The North Grounds Softball League came into existence in 1976, and with it, the tradition of softball as the Law School's signature sport was born."

Tip

Mountain Biking

The Charlottesville area features several excellent places to ride off-road. The rugged course up Observatory Hill is actually on University Grounds. South of town, Walnut Creek Park offers a variety of trails. Farther afield, George Washington National Forest, especially the area near Sherando Lake (Big Levels Reservoir) below the Blue Ridge Parkway, has a wealth of true mountain trails. For details on riding off-road, check out Mountain Bike! Virginia: A Guide to the Classic Trails by Randy Porter, or talk to the experts in the University's Mountain Bike Club or personnel at local bike shops (see Shopping: Bicycles). See www.bikeracing.com for area mountain bike races

Tip

Shenandoah National Park

The beauty and proximity of the park makes Charlottesville a great place for outdoor enthusiasts. Beautiful vistas, spectacular waterfalls, delicious swimming holes, and abundant (and not shy) wildlife are the rewards of a trip to the park, which is easily accessible for day hiking trips (see Day Trips: Hiking) or weekend camping trips. Maps are available at the park entrance.

Safety note: Over the years there have been a few security incidents in the park involving back-country campers. If you go back-country camping, go with a friend or a group, camp out of sight of areas accessible to the road, and be wary of strangers. Most important: tell people where you're going and when you're returning.

What's your opinion?: Add to the C'ville guide, report new information, and let us know what you think. We reserve the right to edit or reject submissions.
