Leadership Report

We are delighted to report that the 2012-2013 Annual Giving Campaign for the Law School finished with a record 8,893 alumni donors and a participation rate of 53.5% (the second highest ever). In addition, alumni participation surpassed 50% for the eighth consecutive year.

Alumni donors came from the Classes of 1934 to 2012. High participation levels were not
concentrated in a particular age group: the Classes of 1956 and 1957 joined the Classes of 2010 and 2012 by topping 75% participation. Seventeen classes exceeded a 60% participation rate.

The following is a financial summary of the Foundation and a report of the Alumni Association for the year ended June 30, 2013:

Law School Endowment and Total Assets

The Foundation holds more than $346 million in endowed and $27 million in non-endowed funds for the benefit of the Law School. In addition, the University holds $48 million and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation holds $4 million in endowed funds designated for the Law School. The combined value of these assets at June 30, 2013, exceeds $425 million.

Annual Contributions

The 48th Annual Giving Campaign raised $8.56 million, of which more than $4.8 million was unrestricted for current use. This year's graduation gift campaign, "This Law School Needs Me," culminated with 87% of the Class of 2013 making a pledge of future support.

Gifts received by the Law School Foundation in fiscal year 2013, including annual
giving, bequests, and special gifts, totaled $13,769,214.

Alumni Association

Last year Dean Paul Mahoney met alumni at events in Atlanta, Birmingham, Chicago,
Hong Kong, New York City, Norfolk, Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City,
Washington D.C., and Wilmington. The Law School also hosted alumni events in
Boca Raton, Los Angeles, Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo. This fall the Dean will host alumni and friends in Boston, Charlotte, Greensboro, San Diego, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

More than 1,200 graduates and guests returned to Charlottesville for Law Alumni Weekend in May. The 2014 reunion weekend takes place May 9–11. Reunions will be held for the Classes of 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, and 2009. All alumni are welcome to attend Law Alumni Weekend events, regardless of class year.

The Law School continues to attract leaders as well as outstanding students. Virginia ranks second in the number of graduates serving as managing partners in top law firms and third in the number of associates promoted to partner at top law firms in 2012. Our graduates also continue to give back through public service.

Private support ensures today's students will have the tools necessary to replicate that success. Thank you for all that you do to make the Law School an important part of your life.

Best wishes,
