This year’s Graduation Gift Pledge Campaign, WWMD - What Would Moritmer Do?, honors Mortimer Caplin '40, while helping secure the Law School's future. A total 335 members of the class of 2010 have pledged -- 90% of the third-year class.

Virginia Law enjoys the highest level of alumni support in the nation and every year students from the third-year class join the ranks of alumni by pledging their future support to the Law School's Annual Giving Campaign.

The Class of 2010 offers its gift in gratitude to Mr. Caplin ’40 and the thousands of alumni before them and as a challenge to those students who follow to continue the impressive tradition of alumni support.

Seventy years ago, Mortimer Caplin graduated after serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Virginia Law Review. After graduation, Mr. Caplin served as a United States Navy beachmaster, and was a member of the initial landing force on Omaha Beach in Normandy. During Mr. Caplin's long and impressive career, he has served as a Professor of Law at Virginia, the U.S. Commissioner of Internal Revenue under President Kennedy, and the founding partner of Caplin & Drysdale, a leading tax law firm in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Caplin's generosity and deep affection for the Law School have resulted in the funding of a scholarship and award for outstanding students who plan on careers in government, and in the establishment of the Daniel Caplin Professorship in honor of his father. In addition, the Mortimer Caplin Auditorium, the Library Atrium & Reading Room, the Caplin Pavilion and the Caplin Public Service Center all attest to Mr. Caplin's philanthropic spirit and his desire to give back to an institution that has played such an important role in his life.

The Class of 2010’s Graduation Gift Pledge Drive continues the legacy of alumni support at Virginia Law; securing the Law School's future and honoring its past.
