Planned Giving: Creating a Legacy for the Law School

To supplement their generous lifetime gifts, a growing number of alumni and friends choose to provide future support for the Law School through their financial or estate plans. This process is known as “planned giving,” and the gifts are known as “planned gifts.”

A planned gift not only creates an enduring legacy of support in the area you choose—whether student financial aid, loan forgiveness, faculty support, scholarships, student intellectual life, or support for one of our many programs—but in many cases offers tax and other advantages. A planned gift may also allow you to make a much larger gift, and create a more significant legacy, than you might imagine possible.

A planned gift may be revocable, giving you the flexibility to alter your plans if your circumstances change, or irrevocable, often making you eligible for a current income tax deduction and a reliable payment stream for the rest of your life.

If you would like to learn more about ways you can support the Law School through a planned gift, please contact Elizabeth Leverage ’92 at the Law School Foundation at 434-924-4514 or by email at eleverage@virginia.edu.

And if you have already included the Law School as a beneficiary of your estate plan or trust, please let us know about your plans by completing a Statement of Intent to Provide Future Support and faxing or mailing it to the Law School Foundation at the address noted.  Your gift is not binding on you or your estate, but informing us of your current plans will help us plan for the Law School’s future.
