Hiring and Retaining World-Class Faculty
The legal academy has changed, drastically. In past years, it was not uncommon for faculty members to remain at the same institution for their entire careers. But today, intense competition for scholars among the top law schools has made higher salaries and greater faculty support essential to retaining them.
Additionally, Virginia, unlike many of our peers in the legal academy, seeks faculty who care about and teach the first-year curriculum at the highest level. That narrows the options available in a profession that generally values scholarship over teaching ability. Finding excellence in both requires skill, persistence, and above all, resources.
