Favorite Shopping Experience/Saturday Morning Activity: City Market Also, the Wednesday farmer's market at Meade Park during the summer months (fewer vendors than the City Market but still plenty of fruits and vegetables).

Whole-grain Bakery: Breadworks 923 Preston Ave., 296-4663

Sheet Cakes and Conventional Bakery: Chandler's Bakery or Albemarle Baking Company

Specialty Bakery: Paradox Pastry Cafe for American and European pastries and light lunch fare and vegan soups. Near Downtown Mall. (Next door to Bluegrass Grill); also Duck Donuts at Stonefield

Beer Spot: Beer Run 156 Carlton Rd., 984-2337. Good Food as well. Casual and Lively. Fourteen beers on tap. Features Beer and Wine tastings (Wed-beer, Fri-wine). Favorite local breweries include Starr Hill and Blue Mountain.

Upscale Restaurant/Bar: Alley Light. Nominated for the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant.

Burgers: Citizen Burger on the Downtown Mall.

Large Salads: Basil

Breakfast: Bluegrass Grill and Bakery 313 2nd St., 295-9700 and Blue Moon Diner 512 W. Main St., 980-6666

Coffee: Shenandoah Joe's 945 Preston Ave., 295-4563. They roast their own. They can also pick it up at some local grocery stores. Many also like the Mudhouse.

Place to Buy Cheese: Feast 416 W. Main St., 244-7800.

Dessert: Paradox Pastry Cafe

Diner: Tip Top 1420 Richmond Rd., 244-3424

Food Delivery Service: Great food delivery service, with different drop-off spots each day of the week (including the Darden parking lot); includes both average grocery-store food and some really special items from local farms.

Fried Chicken: Wayside Deli A Charlottesville tradition for nearly half of a century.

Gelato: Splendora's 317 East Main, 296-8555

Health Food: Integral Health Yoga and Rebecca's Natural Food

Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt: Chap's and Arch's

Nachos: Mono Loco 200 W. Water St., 979 0688

Stationery: Rock, Paper, Scissors 225 E. Main St (Downtown Mall), 979-6366. Tasteful, well-designed products. A website worth viewing.

Meat Source: The Organic Butcher and JM Stock Provisions

Take Out Pizza: Mona Lisa Pasta
