Private schools

While public schools are a viable option, many parents elect to send their children to the numerous private schools in the Charlottesville/Albemarle area, including St. Anne’s-Belfield School, The Covenant School, Tandem Friends School and The Miller School.

Charlottesville Catholic School

Grade K-8

This is the only Catholic school in the area. This is operated under the auspices of Richmond Diocese with a local board of directors.

Charlottesville Day School is an elementary and preschool. Twenty-four educators are on staff serving 142 children from diverse backgrounds.

Charlottesville Waldorf School

Free Union Country School

Ages: 3 yrs-5th grade

Parents are actively involved in the developmentally appropriate curriculum, which has rigorous academics and pays careful attention to the social/emotional needs of students. The enrichment program includes art, science, music, P.E., Spanish, nature hikes and overnight camping. A parent interview and classroom visit are required. Diversity is sought, and financial assistance is available.

Miller School

This co-educational day and boarding school with small class sizes is located in western Albemarle County. Its college prep program emphasizes character and honor.

Montessori Pantops Mountain Community School
1538 Richmond Rd. (250 East)
Ages: 3-14 yrs

This school encourages cooperative learning through peer teaching and interaction in three-year class groupings. Emphasis is on intrinsic motivation, self-education and the development of imagination and creativity through the use of a diverse set of materials, activities and experiences.

Northside Christian School

Ages: 4 yrs-12th grade

Northside offers summer day camp for children age 4 and up (through sixth grade) during June-August.

Peabody School
1232 Stoney Ridge Rd.
Grades K-8

This school is for intellectually advanced children, and testing is required for admission. The accelerated, enriched curriculum features teachers trained in gifted education. Limited partial scholarships are available.

Renaissance School
406 E. Main St.
Grades 9-12

The Renaissance School provides intellectually and artistically motivated high-school students with an interdisciplinary learning environment that integrates the arts, humanities and sciences for a college prep focus.

St. Anne's-Belfield School
2132 Ivy Rd.
Grades Preschool-12

This nondenominational, college prep school is difficult to get into. Applications are accepted throughout the year, but parents are encouraged to apply prior to April to increase their chances. Enrollment is approximately 800 students. Financial assistance is available.

Tandem Friends School

Tandem offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum in an environment built on Quaker values.

Village School

Grades 5-8

Village is a middle school for girls.
