As a $1.2 billion a year business, the University is the area's number-one employer, with more than 11,000 faculty and staff in the areas of information technology, engineering, research and development, business, finance, administration, public relations, athletics, and facilities management. UVA encompasses a vast complex of schools, a level-one trauma center and teaching hospital, research facilities, as well as arts and athletic venues.

In 2007 University of Virginia Human Resources launched "Jobs @ UVA," an online system for job seekers. Those who want to apply for positions at UVA should set up an online account. Job seekers will be able to apply for specific job postings, receive confirmation that their application was received, review the job postings and the status of the positions they applied for, and identify areas of interest so that recruiters can contact them when a position that matches their interests becomes available. Help with the new system is available at University Human Resources, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Online help is available on the Jobs @ UVA Web site, which features an online tutorial and FAQs page.

Other Employers

Several companies in Charlottesville do business nationwide, particularly in publishing (Carden Jennings, LexisNexis, and Silverchair) and computer games and software (Boxerjam). Major employers include Crutchfield Corporation, SNL Securities, State Farm Insurance, AIMR (Association for Investment, Management & Research), Sperry Marine, Comdial, Piedmont Virginia Community College, Sprint, Martha Jefferson Hospital, Red Light Management, and the U.S. Army National Ground Intelligence Center and related contracting companies. You can find all of these companies through their respective Web sites or in the phone book.

Tip

Let's face it: The main employer in Charlottesville is the University and its Medical Center, which employ more than 11,000 people. You can check out available jobs on the Human Resources web site. You must file a state application with Human Resources. You can include a resumé but it probably won't be forwarded to the departments hiring. In order for Human Resources to match your application with a job opening, all the KSAs ("Knowledge, Skills and Abilities") and the job categories on your application MUST MATCH the job category and KSAs required for the vacant job. The best idea is to stay on top of openings yourself and, if possible, send your resumé and a letter to the department mentioned. A University directory is available in Alderman Library.

Tip

The Law School Career Services Office sometimes receives information about jobs suitable for partners of law students. These jobs are posted on the bulletin board outside Career Services on the second floor of Slaughter.

Tip

Charlottesville’s unemployment rate is 2.6 percent; Albemarle County’s rings in at 1.3 percent.
