Getting there:
From Charlottesville, take I-64 west to exit 107. Turn west on US 250 6 miles to Rt. 151, south 3 miles to Rt. 6, west 1.8 miles to Rt. 631, south 1.2 miles to entrance. 

Wine tastings are held Mar - Oct, Wed - Mon from 10 am - 6 pm; Nov - Dec Wed - Mon
10 am - 5 pm, Jan - Feb, Fri - Mon 11 am - 5 pm.

Getting there: Take route 29 to route 33 west at Ruckersville, 2 miles to Quinque. Turn left at route 633 (Amicus road) for 6.5 miles to end at route 603 (Bingham Mountain road) turn left for 1 mile. Winery is on the left. Only open on the dates listed on their website.

Getting there: At the intersection of Rt. 20 and Rt. 33, take Rt. 20 South for 200 yards, left on Rt. 678, right on Rt. 777 and follow signs (20 miles from C'ville).

Lovely setting near the historic ruins of Governor Barbour's mansion. Tastings Mon-Sat 10 am - 5 pm and Sun 11 am - 5 pm, tours Sat and Sun noon - 4 pm. $4 for tasting includes glass. Also home to the Palladio Restaurant. Recommended by alum John Stoner '78.

Owned and operated by the Reeder family. Check the Web site for special events, like the holiday open house. Tastings: open 11 am - 5 pm Fri-Mon (January-March) and 11 am - 5 pm daily (April-December). $2 fee (applied to your purchase of wine). Recommended by alum John Stoner '78.

Family-owned and operated winery in Afton, Virginia. Offers German wines (the winery was started by a retired military family). Open in January on Fridays and Saturdays only, 11:00 am to 5:30 pm. February though December open every day, 11:00 am to 5:30 pm; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, and Easter. Recommended by alum John Stoner '78.

Tastings daily 10 am - 5 pm. Call ahead for their excellent tours—you might get to taste wine that's still in the process of being made. Free.

Getting there: Take Rt. 250 E to Shadwell, turn left onto Rt. 22 E.  At Cismont bear to the right onto route 231 (Gordonsville Rd.). The vineyards are about 2 miles on the right. Tastings are held daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. excluding major holidays. Cost: $5 regular tasting $8 select tasting.

Getting there: I-64 exit 121 to Rt. 20 South (9 miles). Left onto Route 627 (Carter's Mountain Rd.); drive three miles, then turn right onto Blenheim Rd. The Kluge Estate Farm Shop will be the first right off Blenheim Rd. The Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard entrance will be the second right turn onto Grand Cru Dr.

The Farm Shop offers Kluge Estate wines, gifts, wine accessories, artisanal cheeses, topiaries, herbs, and books. Wine and foods pairings are available at the wine bar, in the tasting room or enjoy al fresco on the grounds. The Farm Shop is adjacent to the Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard.

Getting there: Go west on Barracks/Garth Rd. to the town of White Hall. Veer right on Route 810 North (Brown's Gap Turnpike). Turn left on Route 674 (Break Heart Rd.). Continue straight when the road becomes Sugar Ridge Rd. White Hall Vineyards is 1.5 miles on right.

Award-winning wines, beautiful views. Free tours and tastings. Open 11 am - 5 pm, Wed-Sun.

Winery hours change frequently, so call ahead.

Tip

My favorite wineries are Barboursville, Burnley, and Cardinal Point.  (And Barboursville and Burnley can be done in the same afternoon trip.)
