Charlottesville and its surrounding areas have an extensive selection of wineries and breweries to visit, and cider-making is also becoming popular. These businesses, however, may not always keep regular hours throughout the year. See their websites for more information, including detailed maps.

Afton Mountain Vineyards

Getting there: From Charlottesville, take I-64 west to exit 107. Turn west on US 250 6 miles to Rt. 151, south 3 miles to Rt. 6, west 1.8 miles to Rt. 631, south 1.2 miles to entrance. 

Albemarle Cider Works

Getting there: Located on U.S. Route 29, just south of Charlottesville, about 8/10 miles north of State Route 692. From Charlottesville, proceed exactly 8 miles south from I-64 and turn right onto Rural Ridge Lane.

Autumn Hill Vineyard
301 River Drive, Stanardsville
Getting there: Take route 29 to route 33 west at Ruckersville, 2 miles to Quinque. Turn left at route 633 (Amicus Road) for 6.5 miles to end at route 603 (Bingham Mountain road) turn left for 1 mile. Winery is on the left.

Getting there: Rt. 20 South., turn left at Rt. 53, slight right at James Monroe Pkwy., continue on Carters Mountain Road, slight left at Blenheim Farm.

Getting there: From 64 W, travel 13.9 miles and take exit 107 for US-250 towards Crozet. Turn left onto US-250 W and drive 4.8 miles. Turn left onto VA-151 S and destinations will be on the left.

Getting there: I-64 west, exit 107. Left on Rt. 250 west for 4.7 miles. Left onto Rt. 151 south for 2.4 miles. Left onto Rt. 638 (Avon Road) for .9 miles. Left onto Rt. 636 (Batesville Road) for .7 miles. Cardinal Point Winery is on your right.

Castle Hill Cider
6065 Turkey Sag Road, Keswick
Getting there: From I-64 East take Exit 124 to Route 250 East/Shadwell. Turn right onto 250 East. Turn left at Route 22 East. Continue on Route 22, which will fork right at Cismont store. Stay straight (or left) onto Route 231 for 3.3 miles. Turn left on Route 640/Turkey Sag Road. Go .75 miles then turn left between white stone posts at Castle Hill Cider. Follow signs to Tasting Room.

Champion Brewing Co.
324 6th St. SE, Charlottesville
Getting there: Walking from the Downtown Mall, proceed east on the mall, through the Pavilion, and turn right to cross the Belmont Bridge. Turn right on Garrett and then right again on 6th St. SE. Brewery doors on the right.

Delfosse Vineyards
500 DelFosse Winery Lane, Faber
Getting there: From 1-64 W, proceed six miles and take Rt. 29 S towards Lynchburg. Continue 21.9 miles, and turn right onto Hickory Creek Road in Schuyler. Continue on Hickory Creek Road for 2.6 miles. Hickory Creek Road turns slightly right and becomes State Rte. 634. In one mile the vineyard will be on your right.

Getting there: Located in Nelson County, Crossroads Rt. 151 and Rt. 664.

Devil's Backbone also has the Outpost Brewery at 50 Northwind Lane in Lexington.

Early Mountain Vineyards

Getting there: From Rt. 29 N turn left onto VA-230. The vineyard will be on the right in 1.2 miles.

First Colony Winery
1650 Harris Creek Road, Charlottesville
Getting there: Exit 121 off I-64, 10.5 miles on 20 South to 720, take a right.

Glass House Winery
5898 Free Union Road, Free Union
Getting there: Take Barracks Road west for about 4 miles (the name changes to Garth Road). Turn right (north) at the Hunt Country Market onto Free Union Road (Route 601). Stay on Free Union Road through its twists and turns for 7.9 miles to a left-hand turn into the drive of Glass House Winery.

Grace Estate Winery

Getting there: Located near White Hall, Virginia, 14 miles west of Charlottesville in Albemarle County.

Getting there: Exit 121A off I-64, then follow signs to Rt. 53/Monticello. On Rt. 53 between Ash Lawn and Monticello.

Keswick Vineyards
1576 Keswick Winery Drive, Keswick
Getting there: Take Rt. 250 E to Shadwell, turn left onto Rt. 22 E. At Cismont bear to the right onto route 231 (Gordonsville Road). The vineyards are about 2 miles on the right.

King Family Vineyards Student Favorite

Getting there: Take Rt. 250 West past Western Albemarle High School. Turn right onto Rt. 797 (Hillsboro Lane). Turn right onto Rt. 684 (Half Mile Branch). Go one mile, winery entrance on the left. OR, take I-64 West to Exit 107 (Crozet), turn right onto Rt. 250 East. Go 1/2 mile, turn left onto Rt. 707 (Hillsboro Lane) and then as above.

Merriwether Springs Vineyard

Getting there: From The University of Virginia (The Rotunda), head northwest on US-250 BUS W / University Ave. toward Rugby Rd. Continue onto US-250 W / Ivy Road for 7.4 miles. Turn right onto Route 678. Meriwether Springs Vineyard is on your left in 0.8 miles.

Michael Shaps Wineworks

Getting there: Take Rt. 20 south for 12 miles. Turn right at the sign for First Colony Winery (Harris Creek Road). Continue into the woods on the dirt road past the First Colony Winery for about 1/4 mile.

Moss Vineyards
1849 Simmons Gap Road, Nortonsville

Getting there: At Stonefield Commons - the intersection of Rt. 29 and Rt. 743 - take 743 north through Earlysville. 743 becomes Rt. 663 as you turn right onto Simmons Gap Road. Follow Simmons Gap/Rt. 663 into Nortonsville. Vineyard will be on the left.

Oakencroft Vineyard and Winery

Getting there: 3.5 miles west of Rt. 29 on Barracks Road (which becomes Garth Rd). Entrance on the left.

Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyard

Getting there: From I-64 W, take exit 118A to merge onto US 29 S. toward Lynchburg, then turn right onto County Road 692/Plank Road.

Trump Winery

Getting there: I-64 exit 121 to Rt. 20 South (9 miles). Left onto Route 627 (Carter's Mountain Rd.); drive three miles, then turn right onto Blenheim Road.

White Hall Vineyards

Getting there: Go west on Barracks/Garth Rd. to the town of White Hall. Veer right on Route 810 North (Brown's Gap Turnpike). Turn left on Route 674 (Break Heart Road). Continue straight when the road becomes Sugar Ridge Rd. White Hall Vineyards is 1.5 miles on right.

Wild Wolf

Getting there: Located near Winter Green Golf Club, off Highway 151.

Wisdom Oak Winery

Getting there: Located in the heart of Monticello.

In addtion to the above wineries and breweries, the area also has a number of vineyards that can be toured.

Winery hours change frequently, so call ahead.


My favorite wineries are Barboursville, Burnley, and Cardinal Point.  (And Barboursville and Burnley can be done in the same afternoon trip.)
