Law School to Host Federal Appeals Court Oral Arguments

Students and the community will get a rare glimpse at the proceedings of a federal appeals court Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 2-4 pm in the Law School’s Caplin Auditorium. A panel of judges from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will hear arguments from lawyers on four cases, including two patent cases, with one involving patents on Adidas shoes; a case concerning whether a pet treat trademark can be registered; and a case in which a retired federal firefighter is seeking better benefits.
The Federal Circuit is unique among the 13 Circuit Courts of Appeals, which are just one step below the U.S. Supreme Court. The Federal Circuit has nationwide jurisdiction in a variety of subject areas, including international trade, government contracts, patents, trademarks, certain money claims against the U.S. government, federal personnel, and veterans' benefits.
The event is open to the public, although no cameras, recorders, laptops, or backpacks are permitted. (Courtroom Decorum)
