Financial Aid Award Instructions (2008-2009)
If you have been awarded and are accepting Stafford Student Loan funds or have not been awarded but wish to apply for Federal Stafford Unsubsidized Loan funds to offset your estimated personal contribution:
The University of Virginia participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) for Stafford Student Loans.
You may borrow up to $20,500 per year in combined subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford Loans. You may use Unsubsidized Stafford Student Loan funds to help offset the amount of your expected contribution, up to the $20,500 maximum. If you were not awarded but wish to apply for Unsubsidized Stafford Loans for this purpose, be sure that you complete the Stafford Loan application section of the Financial Aid award letter.
To apply for Stafford Student Loans:
- Complete the Stafford Student Loan section in your Financial Aid award letter and indicate the amount you wish to borrow and the lender you will be using for Stafford Loans. Click here for more information on how to choose a lender for your Stafford Loan. Submit the award letter on-line to the Financial Aid Office at the School of Law.
- Complete and return the Federal Verification Worksheet. If changes to your financial aid award are required after the verification process, we will issue a revised award letter.
- Forward to the Financial Aid Office a copy of your 2007 federal individual tax return or TeleFile tax record (and your spouse's return, if applicable).
- If we have requested proof of citizenship or a copy of your Alien Registration Card, you must submit those documents before we can process your Stafford Student Loan application.
- Complete a Stafford Loan Application and Master Promissory Note obtained from a participating lender.
If you have been awarded Perkins Loan funds:
Paperwork for the Perkins Loan application will be sent to you from the University's Office of Student Financial Services. If you have questions concerning Perkins Loan, please call Student Financial Services at (434) 982-6000.
If you have been awarded and are accepting Supplemental Educational Loan funds or if you have not been awarded but wish to apply for Supplemental Educational Loan funds to offset your estimated personal contribution:
Students awarded supplemental educational loan funds now have two options for additional loan resources: the new GradPlus Loan or private-sector educational loan funds. GradPlus Loans are available to all students who are eligible for Stafford Loans. All students, including international students, are eligible for private-sector education loan funds to help offset the amount of your expected personal contribution. You do not need to have been awarded supplemental educational loan aid by the Financial Aid Office to be eligible for either loan.
If you wish to apply for a GradPlus or private-sector educational loan:
- Complete the Supplemental Educational Loan section in your Financial Aid award letter and indicate the lender you will be using for supplemental loan resources. If you are choosing a GradPlus Loan, please include the required lender code and guarantor code. Click here for more information on how to choose a lender for your GradPlus and private educational loans. Submit the award letter on-line to the Financial Aid Office at the School of Law.
- Complete a loan application form and Master Promissory Note from a participating lender.
If you receive outside scholarship assistance:
Any student who receives scholarship assistance from any source outside the University of Virginia School of Law must advise the Financial Aid Office of the amounts and types of assistance received. Your financial aid award must be adjusted to reflect any outside scholarship assistance.
