Class of 2017 Profile

Keisha James

Before law school, KEISHA JAMES conducted research in Ethiopia on women's access to legal services and also interned with an organization working on educational and employment equality in Jordan.

"One of the reasons I decided to attend UVA Law was the wide range of opportunities to continue exploring my interests in human rights law, public interest law and international law. I wanted to attend a law school that would allow me to gain practical experience as well as challenge me academically," she said. "One of my professional goals is to challenge discrimination and defend the rights of those who have been mistreated, and I thought UVA Law would be the perfect place to take the first step in achieving that goal."

FRANCISCO FERNANDEZ-DEL CASTILLO was born in Mexico City and came to the United States at a young age. "I always felt I had a foot in two worlds. This feeling led me to pursue my interest in Arabic by moving to Cairo. These experiences gave me an appreciation for ambiguity and a desire to understand people whose experiences are very different from my own, qualities I hope will serve me well in my legal career."

Fernandez-del Castillo worked as a freelance translator before law school, and is fluent in Egyptian, colloquial Arabic, modern standard Arabic and Spanish. "I chose Virginia for the community," he said. "I knew Charlottesville and UVA were communities that would welcome me and my family."
