| 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. | Third Annual Virginia Law New Students Public Service Day The Student Bar Association’s Public Service Committee would like to invite all new members of the Class of 2014 to participate and volunteer with local organizations by performing a variety of tasks. Participants are asked to arrive at the Law School at 9:30 a.m. to sign in and to pick up their free t-shirt. Students will return around 1 p.m. to the Law School, where the SBA will provide lunch. All incoming students are welcome and encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to get to know Charlottesville and their fellow students. Any interested spouses or significant others are also welcome. Sign up by emailing Karen Dottore at ked2mz@virginia.edu. Questions can also be directed to Karen or to Philip Williamson (pdw3px@virginia.edu). |
| 3 p.m. | Movie and Discussion with Professors Anne Coughlin and Mildred Robinson Join us for a screening of "Rashomon" (Akira Kurosawa 1950). We chose Rashomon for our session for a couple of reasons. First, it is a classic film, one that many critics praise as among the best movies ever made. The film is well worth seeing in its own right. Second, the film is a perfect way to kick off your law studies, for it raises compelling questions that every lawyer confronts. No matter what their area of expertise, no matter what the nature of the case, lawyers always need to ask, "What happened?" This question is at the center of "Rashomon." What do and should lawyers do when eyewitnesses offer credible, but dramatically different, accounts of "what happened"? The film is short, just 88 minutes, so we will have plenty of time for discussion for those who want to stick around after the screening. |
