Martha Ballenger became the assistant dean for student affairs in 2005. In that capacity she provides a variety of services for students, including organizing orientation, working with the Peer Advisor Program, assisting student organizations, arranging for disability accommodations, serving as a liaison with faculty, and providing assistance and support to individual students as needed.

Ballenger received her B.A.
magna cum laude in 1966 from Duke University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1969 she received her law degree from the Law School, where she was a member of the Virginia Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Prior to assuming her current position, Ballenger was engaged in the private practice of law, except for an interval from 1979 to 1982, when she taught contracts, juvenile courts, and bioethics at the Law School. Most recently she was a partner in the firm of Moore & Van Allen, PLLC, in Charleston, South Carolina. She is a member of the bars of North Carolina, Massachusetts, Maryland, the District of Columbia, and South Carolina.
