Rick Kast is associate general counsel at the University of Virginia and has served in this capacity since January 1996. Before that he was in the education section of the Virginia Attorney General’s Office and clerked at the Virginia Supreme Court. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1970 with a B.A. in English with high honors, and from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond in 1973. He has broad-based experience in higher education law, both at the University and in the Attorney General’s Office, and has handled a number of cases in state and federal court deriving from diverse issues including promotion and tenure disputes, employment discrimination claims, student discipline and contract disputes.
