Scot H. Fishman, Esq. served as Dewey & LeBoeuf's director of pro bono, and in this role, he managed the firm's global pro bono legal efforts. He was first tapped to create this position at LeBoeuf Lamb Greene & MacRae in July 2006. In just the first year, the firm experienced the largest jump in pro bono activity among the top 200 American Lawyer law firms based in New York City. When LeBoeuf Lamb merged with Dewey Ballantine to become Dewey & LeBoeuf in October 2007, Fishman was chosen to lead the merged firm's pro bono efforts.
Under Fishman's leadership, Dewey & LeBoeuf was recognized as a leading pro bono law firm by bar associations and many prominent legal service providers around the world, including the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Legal Services NYC, Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Lawyers Alliance for New York, Public Interest Law Institute, and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center. Of the top 200 American law firms, Dewey's pro bono program has been ranked 13th by American Lawyer for two consecutive years. In 2009, Fishman received The Legal Aid Society's 2009 Pro Bono Publico Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Counsel.
Fishman's pro bono work has included entertainment contract negotiation, low-income housing improvement for parents with asthmatic children and general litigation. Prior to directing the firm's pro bono efforts, Fishman was a litigation attorney in the areas of complex energy litigation, insurance class actions, electronic data preservation and numerous other areas.
Prior to law school, Fishman devoted much of his efforts to public interest and governmental work. He served as a Teach For America corps member and taught for three years in an under-resourced elementary school in Washington, D.C.
While at the University of Virginia, Fishman served as the president of the student body and served on the board of Madison House, the office of volunteerism at the university. He has also interned for the White House and in both houses of Congress.
