Mary Elizabeth Magill teaches administrative law, constitutional law, food and drug law, and seminars in constitutional structure and administrative law. Her scholarship focuses on administrative law and constitutional law, particularly separation of powers theory and doctrine, and her articles have been published in the Chicago, Northwestern, Pennsylvania, and Virginia law reviews.  Her 2004 article, "Agency Choice of Policymaking Form," was honored as the year's top scholarly article by the Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice Section of the American Bar Association.

Upon completion of her B.A. in 1988, Magill served as a senior legislative assistant for energy and natural resources for U.S. Sen. Kent Conrad, a position she held until entering the Law School in 1992. In law school she served as Articles Development Editor of the
Virginia Law Review and received several awards, including the Margaret G. Hyde Award, the Jackson and Walker Award for Academic Achievement, the Mary Claiborne and Roy H. Ritter Scholarship, and the Food and Drug Law Institute ScholarshipAfter graduating in 1995, Magill clerked for the Hon. J. Harvie Wilkinson III of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and then for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court of the United States. Following her clerkship with Justice Ginsburg, she joined the faculty. During 2005-06 she is serving as a fellow in the Law and Public Affairs Program at Princeton University.
