Course Description:
This class will examine and explore those tactics and strategies which public interest lawyers routinely employ, and those obstacles and dilemmas that public interest lawyers must often confront, with a particular focus on the advocacy work that takes place outside of, or in conjunction with, litigation. Through a combination of discussion, guest lectures, readings, in-class activities, and group projects, the class will focus on the strategic work of public interest lawyers, exposing students to the skills they must develop -- including legislative and policy advocacy, communications, and working with community groups -- and the questions and conflicts that they will invariably address, as they pursue their careers.
NOTE:
First priority for enrollment in the course will be given to those who are in the law and public service program.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Enrolled students who do not attend the first class session will be dropped. Students seeking to enroll in this course must attend the first class session.
COURSE REQUIREMENT: Readings, in-class presentations and exercises; final group project involving development of multi-strategy advocacy campaign and presentation of this campaign to the class
