Course Description:

This January term course meets Monday-Friday, January 12-16.

How do less-developed countries and nations in transition, independently or with outside assistance, facilitate the rule of law? This seminar will explore that question through the writings and experience of scholars, policymakers, and others working in the field of law and development. Specific topics will include the design of judicial institutions, the roles of property and contract law, and the problem of corruption. The course will be co-taught by Abraham Sutherland, a lawyer who spent three years working on legal development in Afghanistan under the aegis of the State Department.
