Course Description:

Seminars in Ethical Values are designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The seminars are graded on a pass/fail basis; students earn one credit in the spring semester upon successful completion of the seminar.

This seminar will be devoted to a single work, Tolstoy’s War and Peace, considered by many to be the greatest novel ever written and a book that has valuable lessons for our times. If you are one of those people (as I am) who have always meant to tackle this work but were discouraged by its length, this is your chance. Along with the book itself, we will read the recent guide to the book, Give War and Peace a Chance, by UVA Tolstoy expert Andy Kaufman. Kaufman’s book provides a number of ethical themes raised by Tolstoy and we will center our discussions around several of those themes in each session.

NOTE: Meetings will be on Sundays from 5-7 at Professor Cohen’s home. The specific dates will be determined once the class roster is finalized. Pizza dinner will be included. Attendance at all sessions is required. If you miss a session, you will be required either to submit a short (3-5 page) paper discussing the themes of that session, or meet privately with Professor Cohen.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is required
