Course Description:

This course is taught at the JAG School during their 2nd quarter, October 20, 2014 - December 19, 2014. The instructor is MAJ Lister.

This elective explores the preparation, investigation, presentation, and defense of adult and child sexual and physical abuse, but is not a trial advocacy course. Topics will include: offender behavior; interviews of victims and witnesses; child development; use of experts; and victim impact. Grades are based on classroom participation, one written paper and a presentation of that paper. Readings will, like the class, be both theoretical and practical in nature, and will precede discussion in each class. Guest speakers will be an integral part of the class. The class is accessible to all students, but presumes a base level of criminal law knowledge.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Classroom participation, one written paper and a presentation of that paper.
PREREQUISITE: This elective is open to UVa enrollment for 2L and 3L students who have taken Criminal Law or have equivalent experience.
