Course Description:

Seminars in Ethical Values are designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The seminars are graded on a pass/fail basis; students earn one credit in the spring semester upon successful completion of the seminar.

This seminar will explore how recent insights from psychology and related fields can help make us better professionals and leaders. We will consider works dealing with happiness, change (both individual and institutional), negotiation, decisionmaking. and creativity. The six books we will read will be most likely selected from the following:

Roger Fisher, Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate, Daniel Goleman, Primal Leadership, Jonathan Haidt, The Happiness Hypothesis, Jonah Lehrer, Imagine: How Creativity Works, Jonah Lehrer, How We Decide, Natalie May, et al., Appreciative Inquiry in Health Care: Positive Questions to Bring Out the Best, Martin E.P. Seligman, Flourish, Timothy Wilson, Redirect.

NOTE: Seminar meetings will be on Sundays from 5-7 at Professor Cohen's house. The specific meeting dates will be determined in consultation with the class.
