Course Description:

Seminars in Ethical Values are designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The seminars are graded on a pass/fail basis; students earn one credit in the spring semester upon successful completion of the seminar.

It is often said that "what you don't know can't hurt you." Does that imply that what you do not remember also cannot hurt you? What if you could not remember anything at all? What would you care about, and whom would you trust? Conversely, what if no one remembered you, or, more generally, if there were no consequences to your actions? In this seminar, we will take up these and other questions related to connections among memory, identity, and ethical choice. We will discuss several readings (such as Robert Nozickšs The Experience Machine) and films (such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Groundhog Day, and Memento).

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is expected
