Course Description:

Seminars in Ethical Values are designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The seminars are graded on a pass/fail basis; students earn one credit in the spring semester upon successful completion of the seminar.

This seminar will examine environmental values in a selection of readings, both fiction and nonfiction, both polemical and scientific. We will inquire into the sources of environmental values, the kinds of disputes they generate, the way those disputes can be resolved, and risks of both action and inaction in the face of environmental problems. Among the books we will discuss are Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey, The Future of Life by E.O. Wilson, and Wolf Willow by Wallace Stegner. Additional readings that complement and contrast with these books will be assigned as our discussion progresses over the course of the year.

NOTE: We currently plan to have the seminar meet late on Sunday, from approximately 5:00 to 7:00.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is expected
