Course Description:
Seminars in Ethical Values are designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The seminars are graded on a pass/fail basis; students earn one credit in the spring semester upon successful completion of the seminar.
This seminar will be taught jointly by Daniel R. Ortiz (Law) and David T. Gies (Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese). Twelve graduate students (6 Law, 6 Arts and Sciences) will meet the evenings of September 11, September 18, October 2, October 16, and one more date to be determined.
Federico Fellini: Born in 1930, Fellini has long been recognized as the leader of Italian film and one of the most accomplished and influential filmmakers of the 20
th
century. Although he enrolled in law school, there is no record of his ever having attended a class. His films range from the neo-realistic, to the psychological, to the fantastical, to the autobiographical and treat many ethical subjects. Contemporary filmmakers such as Woody Allen, Pedro Almodovar, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, and Martin Scorsese have acknowledged Fellini's deep influence on their work. He won many awards, including several Oscars, and garnered many more nominations still. We will view the following five films:
Nights of Calibria (1957)
Juliet of the Spirits (1965)
Satyricon (1969)
Roma (1972)
Amarcord (1973)
NOTE:
The seminar will meet the evenings of September 11, September 18, October 2, October 16, and one more date to be determined. Anyone with a commitment that conflicts with any of these evenings should not enroll.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is required
