Course Description:

This January Term course meets in Tel Aviv, Israel, Saturday-Thursday, January 12-17.

In this weeklong, intensive short course, students will receive a comprehensive introduction to Israel’s healthcare system. Topics in health law and bioethics will include universal insurance coverage, medical malpractice, mass casualty preparedness, patients’ rights, organ donation, and end-of-life decisions. Additionally, there will be an emphasis on the legal and ethical concerns surrounding medical practices that incorporate modern genetic technologies, including medical and non-medical sex selection, prenatal diagnosis, abortion, surrogacy, and cloning. Each of these subjects will be presented from Israel's unique democracy, a perspective which is multi-religious, Middle Eastern, communitarian, secular, and liberal all at once.

Guest lecturers from various sectors of Israeli society – e.g. academia, government, law, and healthcare will provide hands-on perspectives. The course will also include several field trips, including trips to the Sheba Medical Center and to the Supreme Court in Jerusalem. Students enrolling in this course should be prepared to experience a fast-paced and stimulating learning environment and to engage in open and dynamic group discussions about a variety of controversial ethical questions.
