Course Description:

This January term course meets Monday-Friday, January 14-18.

The Office of the Solicitor General is the near-exclusive representative of the federal government and its agencies before the Supreme Court, and it participates as either a party or an amicus curiae in nearly 2/3 of the Court’s cases each Term. But the Office has other important, but less well-known roles, as well, including reviewing all lower court cases decided adversely to the government to determine whether they should be appealed and, if so, what position should be taken and, in certain circumstances, supervising and/or conducting lower-court litigation itself. This work is accomplished by an office that, even when fully staffed, employs 26 attorneys. This short course will provide an introduction to the Solicitor General’s Office; its work; and its relationship to, among others, the Supreme Court, the President, and the rest of the Executive Branch.

NOTE: Laptops are not allowed during class sessions.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is required. Enrolled students who do not attend the first class session will be dropped. Students seeking to enroll in this short course must attend the first class session.
