Course Description:

Bioethics and the Law will address some of the most divisive, sharply debated, and rapidly evolving issues in society today. The course, which explores the intersection among medicine, technology, and the law, will address issues such as (1) applicable bioethical principles and approaches, (2) human reproduction and birth (including abortion, assisted reproductive technologies, fetal-maternal decision making, and actions for wrongful birth, wrongful life, and wrongful conception), (3) death and dying (including the forgoing of life-sustaining medical treatment, futile treatment, and physician-assisted dying), (4) organ transplantation, (5) research involving human subjects, (6) public health, and (7) human genetics. During the final month of the semester, we will be joined by guest speakers from a range of backgrounds, including physicians, lawyers, researchers, and bioethicists. Confirmed guest speakers include New York Court of Appeals Chief Judge (ret.) Sol Wachtler, who authored some of the earliest and most controversial "right to die" appellate rulings.

COURSE REQUIREMENT: Examination (a paper may be substituted with the permission of the instructor). NOTE: Students seeking to satisfy the upper-level writing requirement must submit a completed Writing Requirement Intent Form to the Student Records Office no later than February 22, 2013.
