Course Description:

The seminar will survey the laws and policies governing the management of lands and natural resources under federal ownership (some one-third of the nation’s continental land area). Beginning with a brief review of the history of federal land policy, the seminar will focus on issues relating to public lands, including national forests and parks, energy and minerals, timber, fish and wildlife, endangered species, water, recreation, preservation of unique values, and occupancy uses. Various resource and energy development issues will be discussed in the context of federal-state jurisdictional powers over federal lands and the applicability of the National Environmental Policy Act to activities on federal lands. The course will address renewable energy on public lands, and recent changes in longstanding federal land policies and regulations.

PREREQUISITE: Environmental Law or Administrative Law recommended, but not required
