Course Description:

SPECIAL NOTES REGARDING SESSION DATES/TIMES/ROOM: This January term course meets Monday-Friday, January 18-22, 2016.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course explores and critically reviews the changing legal resolutions in respect to the human body and its part. The topics surveyed include regulating the retrieval and allocation of organs for transplantation; reproductive cells and organs (sperm, ovum, pre-embryos, and surrogacy agreements), creating and exploiting embryonic and adult stem cells, and regulating the use genetic material. Class discussions aim at identifying or formulating new legal frameworks to meet the new questions arising from exciting medical technologies.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is expected.

Course Requirement:Students will have the option of taking an exam or submitting a paper. For the exam option, a take home examination will be distributed on the last day of the course in a sealed envelope. Students will be on their honor to draft their answers during the stated time upon opening the envelope, and to upload their answer document to LawWeb within 10 minutes thereafter. The deadline to upload an answer document to LawWeb is 4:30 pm (EST) two weeks after the last day of class (February 5, 2016). For the paper option (15-20 pages, font 12, 1.5 space), students will be required to submit their paper via LawWeb by February 5, 2016.
