Course Description:

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This seminar focuses on how the legal system responds to individuals with a mental illness. After initial consideration of mental illness diagnoses, mental health professionals, and the mental health treatment system, topics to be addressed include the relationship between mental illness and violence to self and violence to others, inpatient civil commitment, outpatient civil commitment, commitment as a sexually violent predator, competence to stand trial, the insanity defense, the sentencing of offenders with mental illness, mental health courts, mentally ill prisoners and jail inmates, mental illness and access to firearms, psychiatric advance directives, and the vicarious liability of mental health professionals in tort.

NOTE: Laptops are not permitted during class sessions.

Course Requirement:Several brief written response papers will be required over the course of the semester (all due before the completion of the course).
