Course Description:

SPECIAL NOTES REGARDING SESSION DATES/TIMES/ROOM: This traditionally semester-long course will be compressed from January 25 - February 11, 2016.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will provide a basic overview of copyright law, the legal regime governing rights in original works of authorship (books, music, movies, photographs, software, etc’). The major focus will be the Copyright Act and the core issues of copyrightable subject matter, prerequisites for protection, ownership and transfer, the bundle of rights conferred, what constitutes infringement, defenses, and available remedies. We will briefly touch on fundamental issues in the philosophy and economics of copyright law, international copyright law, and digital copyrights.

Course Requirement:A take-home examination will be distributed in a sealed envelope on the last day of the course, and students will be on their honor to write answers to the exam questions during the stated time upon opening the envelope, and to upload their answer document to LawWeb shortly thereafter. An answer document must be uploaded to LawWeb by 4:30 pm (EST) on February 25, 2016.
