Course Description:

Seminars in Ethical Values are designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The seminars are graded on a pass/fail basis; students earn one credit in the spring semester upon successful completion of the seminar.

This seminar will focus on a series of readings dealing with the relationship between human beings and the environment. In the past, the readings have ranged from the poetic and rhapsodic to the pragmatic and political. They have included canonical works, such as Aldo Leopold’s “Sand County Almanac” and Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” as well as more recent offerings, such as Terry Tempest Williams’ “Refuge” and Gus Speth’s “Red Sky at Morning.” I will be looking for fresh candidates and invite nominations throughout the summer from students who are thinking of registering for the seminar next fall.
