Course Description:

Seminars in Ethical Values are designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The seminars are graded on a pass/fail basis; students earn one credit in the spring semester upon successful completion of the seminar.

This seminar examines issues at the intersection of law, morality, and politics, with an emphasis on general principles rather than legal doctrine. Among the readings that we will discuss will be books on arguments for and against belief in God, the moral values associated with religion, and the role of religion in public life. The coverage of these issues will necessarily be selective, focusing on current debates over religion in contemporary American society. Legal issues, and specifically constitutional issues, will remain in the background of our discussion.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is expected
