Course Description:

Seminars in Ethical Values are designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The seminars are graded on a pass/fail basis; students earn one credit in the spring semester upon successful completion of the seminar.

This course examines the many meanings that Americans have ascribed to the Civil War since it ended more than 140 years ago. We will read a biography of John Brown, study a history of Lincoln's relationship with the Supreme Court, watch the film "Glory!", read a collecton of academic writings on the "lost cause" view of the Civil War, visit a battlefield, and read a contemporary travelogue focused on individuals still passionately interested in the Civil War. Rest assured that the course does not assume any particular knowledge of the American Civil War and definitely does not require you to understand any of those confusing battle maps with all the little red and blue rectangles and arrows showing troop movements.

The course generally meets on Sunday evenings.
