Course Description:
NOTE: This course is taught at the JAG School during their 4th quarter, March 18, 2013 - May 17, 2013. The instructors are Mr. Clark and guest speakers.
This elective explores the preparation, investigation, presentation and defense of Adult Sexual Crimes, but is not a trial advocacy course. Topics will include: Sexual Assault Response Teams; offender behavior; interviewing of victims and witnesses; victimology; overcoming or exploiting societal assumptions (sometimes called rape myths); use of experts. Readings will, like the class, be both theoretical and practical in nature, and will precede discussion in each class. Guest speakers will be an integral part of the class. The class is accessible to all students, but will presume a base level of criminal law knowledge.
COURSE REQUIREMENT: Classroom participation, 3 short (3-4 page) written papers, and a take-home, open-book written examination
PREREQUISITE: 2L and 3L students who have taken criminal law or have equivalent experience
