Course Description:
This seminar explores the history of the African-American lawyer from the nineteenth century to the present. Special attention is given to the place of the black lawyer in the African-American community, the relationship of black lawyers to the larger predominantly white legal community, and the role of black lawyers in the Civil Rights Movement. Readings will be drawn from a variety of primary and secondary sources. Each student will prepare a substantial research paper and make a presentation to the seminar.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Enrolled students who do not attend the first class session will be dropped. Students seeking to enroll in this course must attend the first class session.
