Course Description:

This short course meets 8:20-9:50, Tuesday-Friday, October 16-19, and Monday-Thursday, October 22-25.

Islamic law is an important source of norms for the world’s 1 billion-plus Muslims. This short course is designed to introduce students to the essential doctrines and procedures of Islamic law. Students will explore the development of Islamic law from its origins to the present. It will, in particular, consider how Islamic law has shaped the global Islamic finance industry. In addition to secondary works on Islamic law readings will include legal opinions (fatwas) issued by Muslim jurists as well as legal documentation produced for contemporary Islamic finance transactions.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is required
