Course Description:

This January term course meets Monday-Friday, January 14-18.

This short course will use scientific research on adolescent development as a lens through which to examine the design and operation of the juvenile justice system, focusing on a recently released study by the National Academy of Sciences co-chaired by Professor Bonnie. Among other topics, the course will address the purposes and current practices of juvenile justice, racial disparities in the administration of juvenile justice, the meaning of holding juveniles accountable for their wrongdoing, what is known about the effects of juvenile justice interventions in preventing reoffending, and the nature and effects of recent federal state and local initiatives undertaken to reform the system.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is expected. Enrolled students who do not attend the first class session will be dropped. Students seeking to enroll in this short course must attend the first class session.
