Course Description:

This January term course meets Monday-Friday, January 13-17.

This course addresses regulation of toxic chemicals in the environment. It will include an introduction to foundational concepts of risk assessment and risk management, which seek to integrate the science on chemical risks with policy-making. The course will explore the principles of regulation of hazardous wastes and toxic substances under statutes such as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA or “Superfund”) and the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). While sharing some characteristics with air and water pollution laws, these laws present significant legal and policy questions of their own. They exert significant influence on domestic manufacturing and commercial activities and are a mainstay of current environmental law practice.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT: Attendance at all class sessions is expected. Enrolled students who do not attend the first class session will be dropped. Students seeking to enroll in this course must attend the first class session.
