Elizabeth Averill serves as director of public service. She provides counseling to students who are interested in exploring public interest work.
Averill graduated from Yale University in 1998 and earned her J.D. from New York University School of Law in 2003. After graduating from law school, she joined Latham & Watkins in Washington, D.C., and then clerked for Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald in the Southern District of New York. Following the clerkship, Averill worked in the litigation and white collar practice groups of Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C., and later worked on education and juvenile justice cases as a volunteer for the Legal Aid Justice Center in Charlottesville, Va. Prior to joining the Mortimer Caplin Public Service Center, she worked for the U.S. Army and provided legal assistance to service members, veterans and military family members at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
