Chris Kavanaugh is an assistant U.S. attorney in the Homicide Section of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. Kavanaugh graduated summa cum laude from Georgia Tech in 2002 and from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2006, where he received the Trial Advocacy Award, given to one member of the graduating class who best exemplifies excellence in trial skills.
After graduating in 2006, Kavanaugh served as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge James C. Cacheris of the Eastern District of Virginia in Alexandria. He then joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. In the last five years, Kavanaugh has served in the Appellate, Major Crimes, and Homicide sections and has trained newly appointed AUSAs in evidence and trial skills. He has represented the United States in more than 40 criminal trials, including 25 jury trials as the lead prosecutor, and has argued several appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. He is currently a member of the Homicide Section, where he investigates and tries homicide cases in Washington, D.C.
