Circulation
The circulation department is the first contact point for checking out or renewing materials, getting oriented, receiving assistance searching the online catalog (VIRGO), or asking about library policies. The circulation desk is on the left as you enter the first floor of the library, and the department can also be reached by telephone (434-924-4058) or e-mail.
Checking Out and Renewing Books
Most library materials can be checked out by law students or other graduate students for the semester, and by undergraduates and other borrowers for one month. Materials are subject to recall, but they can generally be renewed if not requested by another patron. Statutes, looseleaf volumes, unbound periodical issues, reports, indexes, and reference materials do not circulate outside the library, and bound periodical volumes circulate for only seven days. Renewals may be requested online through VIRGO User Services, as well as in person or by telephone or e-mail.
Returning Books
Books checked out from any UVA library may be returned to any UVA library. At the law library, they can be returned at the circulation desk or, when the library is closed, in the book drop to the left of the entrance.
Who May Borrow?
Borrowing privileges are extended to UVA students, faculty, staff and alumni; members of the legal profession; faculty of other Virginia colleges and universities; adult residents of Charlottesville and Albemarle County; and members of the Virginia General Assembly.
Recalls
You may enter a recall for an item that is checked out by using the "Request" function in the online catalog. Regardless of which library the item is from, you may request “Law Library” delivery. We will notify you by e-mail when it is available for you to pick up. All recalled materials must be returned within eight days of the recall notice. Recall overdue fines accrue at $1.00 a day.
Status Inquiry
You can view your checked out items, recall requests, fines, and other library messages through the “User Services” function of VIRGO. Log on to VIRGO, click on User Services on the left side of the screen, click on User Status, enter your User ID and PIN (last four digits of your ID), and click appropriate button.

When materials are returned late and fines have accrued to $10.00 or more, the user is billed. Bills should be paid within 30 days and can be paid at any University Library, except Health Sciences. Bills unpaid after 30 days are referred to the University Student Financial Services for collection. Library privileges are suspended and students are barred from registration, graduation and other University-wide privileges until the account is settled.
When materials are not returned and become long overdue the user is billed for replacement cost and library privileges are suspended. This includes use of Special Collections, Interlibrary Services and LEO book delivery. If materials are not returned or paid for within 30 days of billing, the bill is referred to the University Student Financial Services for collection. This action bars students from registration, graduation and other University-wide privileges.
Accounts that have not been referred to Student Financial Services may be cleared at any Library circulation unit by returning the items and paying the fines. If the account has been referred to Student Financial Services, payment must be made there (Carruthers Hall). Payment for materials found and returned within 90 days of payment will be refunded. Prompt response to bills from the Library will avoid referral.
Carrels
Study carrels are available to faculty research assistants and law school journal members. Inquire at the circulation desk for all carrel assignments.
People with Disabilities
The Law Library staff is committed to assisting people with disabilities, so that they may effectively use our resources and services. If you have any questions or special requests, please ask at the circulation desk, call (434-924-4058), or e-mail.
Guides/Maps
Location guides are posted on the first floor and at the top of the steps to the second floor of the library. Printed user guides and maps are also available at the circulation and reference desks. Please ask at either location if you cannot find an item or need directional assistance.
