Creating UVA Accounts
Accessing Your UVA E-mail
As an incoming U.Va. student, you will have a University-provided email account for electronic mail. UVa student email is hosted by Gmail so your UVa email account is much like a regular Gmail account but resides in the Virginia.edu email domain. There are several steps involved in activating your UVa email account. Before you get started you should find the email from the Financial Aid Office referring to the Student Information System (SIS). That email will have a computing ID and student ID number that will be necessary to activate your UVa email account. If you cannot find that initial email, please notify LawITC or the Financial Aid office. Directions are listed below. If you have trouble creating your UVA e-mail account, please contact LawITC for help.
Once you have completed the steps for activating your UVA e-mail account, you can use Webmail (www.mail.virginia.edu) as an easy way to confirm that you have access to your e-mail accounts without configuring an e-mail client. This is very important. Official Law School communications will gradually transition to your UVA e-mail accounts as the fall semester draws nearer.
Creating UVA E-mail Accounts
There are several steps involved in activating your UVA e-mail account. Before you get started you should find the e-mail that you received referring to the Student Information System (SIS). That e-mail provided a computing ID and student ID number at the bottom that are necessary to activate your e-mail account. When you have your computing ID and student ID number, you can proceed to Step 1 of e-mail activation.
Step 1: If you have not done so already, create your initial UVA SIS password. Using the computing ID and student ID from the e-mail, go to the following Web site and set your initial UVA SIS password:
If you already have a working SIS password, you can skip this step and proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: With your computing ID and initial SIS password in hand, you can begin the activation of your UVA e-mail account. To do this you will have to review proper policies and procedures for e-mail and complete the Responsible Computing Quiz. All of this can be found at: https://www.itc.virginia.edu/students/new.html
Once you complete the Responsible Computing Quiz, you will be prompted to choose an e-mail provider. Once that step is completed you should be able to access your UVA e-mail by going to www.mail.virginia.edu.
Creating LawWeb Accounts
Once you activate your e-mail account, you will be queued for the creation of a LawWeb account. LawWeb is our local intranet and provides a gateway to course pages and other class-related materials. Since there is little useful information in LawWeb for rising 1Ls, the first batch of LawWeb accounts likely will not be distributed until June. After that first group goes out, any subsequent e-mail account activations should generate a LawWeb account ID and password creation within 24 hours. The LawWeb account ID and password will be e-mailed to you at your Virginia.edu e-mail account, so hold on to that e-mail until late July or August when LawWeb will start being useful for you. But please remember that you MUST activate your Virginia e-mail account before the LawWeb account process can proceed.
