Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan services are provided to UVa law faculty and students for materials not available at any UVa library. Items that can be borrowed include books, journal articles, reports, dissertations, government documents, and materials in microform. The turnaround time depends on the lending institution, but averages one week. Delays or problems with your request will be communicated to you via e-mail.

Before submitting an ILL request, check the VIRGO online catalog to see if any UVa library owns it. If so, you will need to go to that library to retrieve it (unless you have faculty status). If the item is checked out, click Recall Item and enter your computing ID and the last 4 digits of your social security number OR the last 4 digits of your university ID (for anyone entering UVa in August, 2007 or later). Select Law as the pickup library. When it becomes available, you will receive an e-mail telling you it is on hold for you here.

If the title is unavailable, you should then request an ILL, following these steps:

If the title in VIRGO is missing or you want a different edition, click on the Requests button on the toolbar at the top, followed by UVa Users (not Health Sciences). You will notice that the fields for the record you are currently viewing will already be filled out on the form (which you can edit, if necessary).

Interlibrary loan requests are processed by the University Library’s Interlibrary Services Department. If you have questions, you may e-mail them at 4leo@virginia.edu, or by calling 434-982-2617. You may also ask a reference librarian at the Law Library for assistance.

Materials are usually loaned for a period of 56 days. Contact the ILL department if you need the item longer.

For alumni and members of the Virginia bench and bar, the library provides photocopies of journal articles, cases, and statutes, as allowed under copyright law. Please direct your questions to the library’s reference desk, either in person or by phone at 434-924-7465.
